7 Most Scariest Movies of the 2000s

This post is entirely opinion based. The movies listed below are the movies I consider the most scariest of the 2000s, and being that I’ve watched a lot of scary movies, not many have come to terrify me like these. Take a look at my list and see if you agree or disagree. Remember these movies are rated PG-13 and above so if you’re underage, then you may need parental guidance while watching these movies! Feel free to comment your own top seven scariest movies of the 2000s.

#7: 30 Days of Night (2007)

30 Days of Night

An Alaskan town is plunged into darkness for thirty days all while fending off a horde of vampires. 30 Days of Night featured the scariest vampires I have ever seen in a movie. These are not the Twilight vampires at all. They’re vicious and they are out for blood. This movie is also one of the goriest movies I’ve seen.  For the first time, I was afraid vampires could exist and if they did, boy would I be in trouble.

#6: The Descent (2006)

The Descent

A caving expedition goes wrong as six women become trapped and must fight off flesh eating predators lurking in the darkness. The Descent is unlike the other movies on this list because it isn’t centered around a haunted house or an evil ghost. It’s about the unknown which is even scarier. The claustrophobia that I experienced in this movie made me anxious about going anywhere underground. To be honest, this movie will have you question any cave trips that you might be considering.

#5: The Strangers (2008)

The Strangers

During their honeymoon, a young couple is terrorized by three masked strangers. The reason that the The Strangers made my list is because it hits home. It doesn’t deal with things that are make believe. Instead, The Strangers is able to tap into a real scare and that is the anxiousness that comes with being home alone. This movie is the most realistic on this list and it makes you ask, is someone watching me?

#4: Lake Mungo (2008)

Lake Mungo

A sixteen year old girl’s death is investigated by a filmmaker who reveals haunting evidence that the girl may still be alive…in spirit. Lake Mungo is terrifying because of the sense of realism to it. Even though it’s a mocumentary like the popular Blair Witch Project, it sets to scare you just the same. Maybe even more. The blandness of the characters. The monotone attitude. And last but not least, the images of Alice’s ghost will stay in your mind long after the movie is over.

#3: Bug (2006)

Bug

A lonely woman meets an unstable veteran who makes her believe that there are bugs crawling under her skin. Bug is one of the most disturbing movies ever. It’s a slow burner but gets more intense as the paranoia builds. The last part of the movie will stick in your head and will make you seriously feel just as psychotic as the main characters. After watching this movie, I think I just wanted to take a bath or stay in my room for a couple of days.

#2: The Ring (2002)

The Ring

A videotape that kills its viewer in seven days gets into the hands of a journalist who must figure out the origins of the tape in a week. The Ring is a remake of the Japanese horror film, Ringu. What was really frightening about The Ring was that it was so engaging. I couldn’t turn my eyes away from the screen no matter how much I wanted to. And the fact that the ghost comes through the television, that just tops the cake.

#1: The Grudge Series (2004-2009)

The Grudge

Americans in Japan are haunted by a vengeful curse. The Grudge series is another “J-horror” remake that never ceases to make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. I think that the only reason that this movie is so scary has everything to do with the evil entities. That pale skin and long black hair just does it for me. The effect that they had on me made me afraid to turn the lights out at night. To put it simply, this movie will scare the pants off of you.
